Frequently Asked Questions

When is the deadline for applications?

The next administrative deadline is June 12, 2012.

Can I email my application?

No, a hard copy of the application package as well as an electronic copy on a single CD must be submitted.

Will my application be accepted if it is postmarked by the administrative due date?

No, only applications RECEIVED on or before the administrative due date are guaranteed to be reviewed.

Do I have to begin the internship immediately?

Students should plan to begin their fellowship within one year of notification.  Successful candidates are usually notified within 3 months of the application deadline.

What is leveraged funding?

Leveraged funds are support (cash or in-kind) from sources other than the grant award that contribute to the applicant's degree.  All waived indirect costs should be included as leveraged funding.

What is in-kind support?

In-kind contributions are the value of non-cash contributions to the training program provided by any third party, including counterpart contributions from host country institutions. In-kind contributions may be in the form of space, equipment, supplies, expendable property, and the value of goods and services directly benefiting and specifically identifiable to a participant or training program.

What is the difference between cost share/match and leveraged funding?

Cost Share, sometimes referred to as "Match", is a legal requirement in the terms of a grant.  It is subject to audit.  Leveraged funding is complimentary funding that contributes to the research or student's degree.  The Borlaug LEAP award does not require cost share but leveraged funding is considered in the review process.

How should the application be submitted?

The application package must be submitted by the US faculty member on behalf of the student and CGIAR mentor.  It is the US faculty member's responsibility to make sure all necessary approvals and reviews by their institution's Sponsored Programs Office are completed prior to submission.

If funded, how will the award be administered?

As this is a proposal submitted by the U.S. faculty member, it is processed as a grant proposal not as a fellowship application, and therefore will be processed by the Office of Sponsored Programs at the U.S. institution. If the application is funded, the award will be made to the faculty member (on behalf of the student applicant) in the form of a subgrant to the U.S. institution. It will be administered by the U.S. faculty member's academic department or equivalent.  The award may not be reassigned to another institution without express written permission from the Borlaug LEAP Management Entity.

How can I find a CGIAR mentor?

The applicant's work should already be embedded in an existing program or project that will ensure the long-term mentorship of the student. Student applicants or US faculty mentors looking for collaborators within the CG Centres may contact the focal point at the Centre of interest. Click here for a list of CG contacts.

How can I find a US faculty mentor?

The applicant's work should already be embedded in an existing program or project that will ensure the long-term mentorship of the student. Successful applicants should take the initiative to seek out US faculty mentors from a US graduate-level university appropriate to their research topic. CGIAR scientists looking to make linkages with US faculty should contact the focal point at their Centre or contact BorlaugLEAP@ucdavis.edu for more information.
